dc.description Topic of vital importance claims: Publicly promoted youth cult and widely spread stereotype so that what is beautiful is good (Vermeir ir Van de Sompel, 2013), has a catastrophic effect on women’s self-portrait, self-identification, self-body acceptance and even quality of decisions (Bacmany, 2015). Even though beauty industry is at it thrive because of it, plastic and other interventional procedures, due to their high prices remain unavailable to many potential clients. That is why alternative methods for facial rejuvenation such as facial acupressure, massage and facial exercises are increasingly applied and believed to show positive results. These methods, which are often non-invasive and cheaper are mostly practiced by professionals without medical education (Van Borsel ir kt., 2014) which is leads to concern, since muscle overload is often the cause of premature wrinkles. The lack of information remains and further research confirming effectiveness of these methods is still needed. Goal: To determine the effect of passive facial exercise on women's skin characteristics. Objectives: 1. Define concept, signs, and factors influencing the aging of the skin. 2. Describe major changes in facial structures and impact of facial muscle tone on facial aging. 3. Evaluate women‘s facial skin parameters and effectiveness of passive facial exercises to reduce the the signs of aging, based on the duration of the research. Research methods: scientific and professional literature analysis, qualitative study (experiment). Research participants: The study involved 12 women aged 40 to 55 years. The study selection was targeted. Selection criteria: gender, age, visible signs of aging in the face: mimic wrinkles, decreased skin elasticity. Outcome: The positive effects of passive facial exercise on the overall characteristics of female facial skin and subjective sensations has been established. After 12 weeks of passive facial exercise, the total moisture level of the facial skin increased by 10%; most changes were detected in the T-zone. The study showed a total increase in skin elasticity indices of 8%. However, the most influence passive facial exercise had on wrinkle depth parameters, as their overall depth decreased by 18%, the biggest changes were 31%, in the area of the chin where the depth of the marionette lines was measured. Changes in the pigmentation of the skin remained modest, as it was expected, a stubborn decrease of 3% was identified. The results of the subjective sensation table showed a decrease in sensation of stretch and sensitivity, women after a course of exercises reported an increase of brightness, elasticity and softness sensations in their skin. Conclusions: 1. Aging results in epidermal thinning, regenerative process disorders, weakening of skins protective barrier function, uneven melaninocyte distribution, pigmental stains, poor nutrient and oxygen circulation between layers. Collagen, elastin fibers, and hyaluronic acid in the dermis decreases. Although the speed of these processes is genetically determined, it can be accelerated by various additional factors such as: malnutrition, inadequate water intake, harmful effects of UV rays, alcohol, smoking, low physical activity. 2. As a result of aging, the loss of bone mass in the upper jaw and the cheekbones, along with an increase in the orbital rim, changes the facial skeleton, resulting in subcutaneous fat losing it’s stability while the gravity is pulling it down. The muscles are shortened, as well, the amplitude of their movement decreases, allowing mimic folds to be formed. Irregular posture and long-lasting static work position creates the look of a tired face. 3. Passive facial exercise has a positive effect on both objective female facial skin characteristics and subjective sensations. After a passive facial exercise course an increase of moisture and elasticity and a decrease in the depth of the wrinkles was observed. As subjective sensations, women have identified lower sensitivity and stretch sensations, as well as increased skin firmness, tenderness, and beauty, so it might be stated that passive facial exercise is an effective way to ensure good skin health and appearance. en
