The present work deals with the one of the biggest problems in Lithuania that has been going on for the past year – emigration. It is making a tremendous impact on Lithuania‘s demographic, economic and social structure. Emigration - as the social phenomenon has always been watched and analysed not just in the departments of statistics or migration, but also by various Lithuanian and foreign researchers. Based on their work, official statistics and other significant research, the analysis of the present thesis will deal with the phenomenon, the origins of emigration and the theories of the underlying cause. Also the research involves the comparison of the statistics throughout all the time periods. This research is especially focused on the emigration from Lithuania, by looking at its historical development from the establishment of the country to the modern days. This present work analyses the statistics of emigration from Lithuania during the period of the recovery of its independence in 1990 up to the present day. Using the statistical data and scientific references, different causes of emigration in different periods have been distinguished. A lot of attention is paid to the most popular direction of emigration from Lithuania – the United Kingdom, as well. Even though numerous authors analyse the integration of Lithuanians after their coming back from immigration, very little information is to be found on how Lithuanians integrate in a foreign community. That is why this research focuses on the lack of social skills of Lithuanian immigrants. The subject matter of the research – integration of people with the lack of social skills in the United Kingdom. The aim of this research is to identifying the issues that Lithuanians face in the United Kingdom and find out where and how immigrants find the help and assistance that is needed. The objectives of the research: 1. To analyse emigration as a social phenomenon based on the various work and research of multiple authors.
2. To look into the history of Lithuanian migration and official statistics, and highlight the most popular destination of Lithuanian emigrants – the United Kingdom and talk about the life of Lithuanian immigrants in the country. 3. To conduct a dependent study of Lithuanians who lack social skills and who live in the United Kingdom. The respondents – a social worker, the founder of women‘s crisis center, a member of the women‘s crisis center and the volunteer at Lithuanian addiction rehabilitation center „Alfa“. |
