Obesity is becoming a particularly important issue in a modern society. Recently a lot of emphasis has been put on health education programs so nurses face new requirements, not only to take care of their patients but also to educate them. This means, nurses have to provide their patients with the knowledge about their health which helps them to acquire proper eating habits and can influence the patients‘ health and life quality.
Work aim – to assess nurses’ knowledge and education activities in the care of patients with obesity.
Research tasks:
1. To reveal theoretical aspects of obesity.
2. To determine nurses who care for obesity patients, knowledge
3. To determine nurses who care for obesity patients, educational activities.
Methodology. For theoretical analysis of the topic used method of scientific literature and sources analysis. Method of data collection – anonymous questionnaire for nurses. Data analysis method – mathematical analysis of data using MS Excel software. Graphic representation. The study included 57 subjects.
Work structure. The work consists of two parts: the first part – theoretical aspects of obesity, nurses knowledge and educational activities. The second part - performed and discussed in quantitative research methodology, presentation of the researches results.
Research findings and conclusions. Nurses have evaluated themselves ,,good” for their knowledge about obesity. This shows that they are aware of the main aspects of working with people who are obese. Most often nurses lack the information about the usage of compensatory aids and appliances as well as the secure lifting and transportation of the patients. One of the most common functions that nurses perform is to develop patient‘s new eating habits and to encourage physical activity. More than a half of the nurses claim that educating their patients help them to understand the health problems obesity can cause and motivate them to follow the instructions they get. Mostly, nurses provide their obese patients and their relatives with the information about healthy nutrition, change of the eating habits, physical activity and their influence on a person‘s health. Most nurses find the conversation to be the most acceptable method of education of the patients who suffer from obesity.
