dc.description Relevance of the topic: Moving to a long-term nursing home is not an easy and simple process as it affects everyone differently. People need to adapt to the new changes in their lives there. This integration process depends on the health and cognitive function of the individual as well as the acceptance by the new surroundings that may or may not allow them to socially function. Elderly people who get into unfamilliar setting experience shock not only because they will need to live with strangers, but also completely change their lifestyle. The long-term nursing home patients cannot immediately cut ties with their previous lives, they feel the lack or absence of privacy, shrinkage of personal space. They also miss their familiar surroundings and people that are dear to them. Because of these reasons, the integration process is very difficult. The practical significance of the research: Social workers who provide social services to elderly nursing home patients can use this research to help people adapt better to their new surroundings. The goal of the research: Discover the issues faced by the elderly during their adaptation to the living in the long-term nursing home. Research objective: Issues faced by the elderly during their adaptation to the living in the longterm nursing home as well as adaptation to the new living conditions. Tasks: 1. Define the specifics of the adaptation. 2. Describe the theoretical understanding of aging. 3. Describe the activity of a social worker in the long-term nursing home during the period of adaptation. 4. Identify the adaptation issues faced by the elderly while living in a social care institution. Research method: Descriptive quantitative. Questionnaire filled out by 30 elderly people who live in a long-term care facility. Analysis of scholarly literature, questionnaire, analysis of the data received from the said questionnaire. Research was conducted in May 2018. Research conclusions: The data analysis showed that the major issue, faced by approximately one third of the respondents, is their living environment – the lack of single occupancy rooms. Those who live in double and triple occupancy rooms expressed that they have difficulties with communicating with their roommates, different needs and different age groups than those of said roommates. The majority of respondents said that their unwillingness to communicate is influenced by their own stubbornness, introverted personalities, negative attitude as well as lack of close people. Less than half of the residents responded that they contact close people every day or once a week. One third claims that they contact the dear ones once a month. Almost half of the residents claim that it was difficult to adapt to this new chapter in their lives because they had to change their own habits. However, one fifth of the residents did not face any difficulties because, in their opinion, the living conditions in the long-term care facility were good. Throughout the research more than half of the respondents claimed that the time spent in the facility would help them to get used to the place. In other words, the longer the person is living in the long-term nursing home, the easier it is to adapt to the new environment. Three respondents noted that they still are not used to the new environment and living conditions. en
