International cooperation promotes efficiency of municipality work, tolerance for other nations and culture, reduces social exclusion and improves the social situation. Developing the international cooperation, Šakiai district could become an attraction of investments, tourists and specialists from various fields, what would positively influence the economical situation of the district. The problem Is the international cooperation in Šakiai district municipality effective enough and what are the possibilities of its development? The aim of the work is to analyze the international relations of Šakiai District Municipality and to offer opportunities for their improvement and development. Methods. analysis, systematization and summation of scientific and publicistic literature, as well as analysis of legal acts, questionnaire survey, interviews and document analysis. Structure. The first chapter presents the concept and legal regulations concerning local self-government, the importance and meaning of the international cooperation to the municipality of the region, as well as the process of international cooperation of the municipality and the prerequisites for effective international cooperation. The second chapter describes the characteristics of Šakiai district municipality, research methodology and results as well as their analysis. The third chapter presents the assessment of the situation of international cooperation of Šakiai district municipality and its development possibilities. Results of the work – the opinion of respondents revealed that it is expedient to expand the international cooperation in order to share good experiences with partner cities as well as develop competences of council workers. It is recommended to make connections with new cities (municipalities) - Adechė (Spain), Droeda (Ireland), Vasa (Finnland), Valmiera (Latvia) and Kohtla Jervė (Estonia). It is also recommended to prepare a strategic plan for the development of international cooperation, to appoint a competent specialist responsible for international cooperation in municipality, to provide more detailed information on cooperation on the municipality website, to enable staff to improve qualifications in this area. dc.description.abstract	Tarptautinis bendradarbiavimas yra naudingas vietos savivaldoms ir valstybei, nes skatina efektyvesnį problemų sprendimą, valstybės tarnautojų ir savivaldybės administracijos darbuotojų kvalifikacinį tobulėjimą, inovacijų įdiegimą. Atlikus tyrimą išsiaiškinta, kad Šakių rajono savivaldybės tarptautinis bendradarbiavimas nėra pakankamas. Išanalizavus tyrimo rezultatus pateikti konkretūs pasiūlymai Šakių rajono savivaldybės tarptautinio bendradarbiavimo plėtrai.	en_US
