dc.description As the population is getting older, newly occurring medications with the already existing ones in the market are influencing production and consumption volumes. It also influences people‘s households by filling their current box of medications ever so slightly. In the same time the old and discarded medicine is still being kept and that could affect people‘s safety. Unsuitable management and usage of expired medication is increasing people‘s irrational usage opportunities and the probabilities of people and children getting poisoned. In addition, improper medication disposal could result in environmental problems. The aim – to reveal the experiences of older people keeping and discarding medication that they normally use. Objectives: 1. To reveal the factors of inappropiate use of medicine used by the elderly. 2. To identify the experiences of older people while managing and discarding their medications in their households. Methods: this paper carries out scientific literature analysis. In the method of a questionnaire survey, 100 Rokiškis city older people that had cardiovascular diseases were questioned. The research was conducted on March and April of 2018. The survey was carried out in Rokiškis city selected X-pharmacy. The results show that the respondents keep their medications in several locations (38 perc.) in the bedroom (66 perc.) and in the kitchen (41 perc.). Results reveal that medications are discarded various ways. Medications are brought back to the pharmacy (34 perc.), thrown out with the rubbish (27 perc.) or not discarded and are kept at home (17 perc.) The research shows that one fifth of surveyed people keep ten different names medications in their homes and more than a third are keeping eleven and more different names of medications. Surveyed people keep their medications in various facilities and places. Two fifths of respondents keep their medications more than one place: kitchen, bedroom and one fifth of respondents keep their medications in a sunny and not a dry place. Many of the places where people keep their medications are messy, not often cleaned and one third of respondents’ men do not clean their medicine cabinets at all. There are various reasons why respondents are encouraged to keep the medications, most often still valid expiration date and an often need of medication for other members of the family. In addition, there are various reasons why respondents keep their expired medications: the leftover medicine after treatment courses, often for a doctor recommending to change the medication, occurring side effects, too large prescribed medication volumes and medication expiration period. Respondents agree that if the medications are released to the environment, it can really affect and even harm it. Nevertheless, the research revealed that more than a third respondents bring the expired medicine back to the pharmacy and the rest just through them out with the rest of the rubbish or burn it. en
