dc.description	Ensuring the right of defence in criminal proceedings is one of the conditions for a fair trial. According to the Code of Criminal Procedure of the Republic of Lithuania, a defence counsel is a person who, in accordance with the procedure established by law, provides legal assistance to a suspect, accused, convicted or acquitted person, defends their rights and legitimate interests. Defenders may be lawyers who are entered in the list of practicing lawyers of the Republic of Lithuania, as well as legal assistants. According to the official statistics portal, in 2017 and in 2018, the number of registered criminal offenses amounted to 63,846 and 57 830; in 2019 the number reduced to 51 449. The number of these criminal offences shows that the institute of the defense counsel becomes quite important in criminal proceedings, therefore it is expedient to clarify the meaning and purpose of the institute of the defense counsel.	en_US
dc.description.abstract	Teisės į gynybą užtikrinimas baudžiamajame procese yra viena iš teisingos bylos išnagrinėjimo sąlygų. Pagal Lietuvos Respublikos baudžiamojo proceso kodeksą gynėju laikomas asmuo, kuris įstatymų nustatyta tvarka teikia teisinę pagalbą įtariamajam, kaltinamajam, nuteistajam ar išteisintajam, gina jų teises ir teisėtus interesus. Gynėjais gali būti advokatai, kurie yra įrašyti į Lietuvos Respublikos praktikuojančių advokatų sąrašą, taip pat gynėjais gali būti ir advokatų padėjėjai. Remiantis oficialiosios statistikos portalo duomenimis, 2017 m. užregistruotų nusikalstamų veikų skaičius siekė 63 846, 2018 m. – 57 830 ir 2019 m. - 51 449. Iš šių nusikalstamų veikų skaičius matyti, kad gynėjo institutas baudžiamajame procese tampa ganėtinai svarbus, todėl tikslinga išsiaiškinti gynėjo instituto prasmę ir paskirtį.	en_US
