slaugytojų veiklą teikiant dvasinę, psichologinę, socialinę bei fizinę pagalbą mirštančiajam;
nustatyti slaugytojų veiklą teikiant pagalbą mirštančiojo artimiesiems.
Tyrimo metodika: mokslinės literatūros analizė, kiekybinis tyrimas (anketinė
anoniminė apklausa raštu). Tyrime dalyvavo 55 respondentai (bendrosios praktikos slaugytojai),
Description:
Topic relevance: According to Laurs et al. (2018), health specialist state that lack of
knowledge on dealing with mourning relatives and taking care of dying patient is a serious
matter prevending from providing comprehensive care. In a study conducted by Želaitė et al.
(2019) it was revealed that the factors which create the biggest difficulties for nurses are deaths
of patients. In order to ensure quality and comprehensive nursing care towards one’s life, it is
vital to recognize the nursing activities while assisting a dying patient and their relatives.
Research topic: what are nursing activities while providing assistance to a dying
patient and their relatives?
Research object: nursing activities while providing assistance to a dying patient and
their relatives.
Research objective: to uncover nursing activities while providing assistance to a dying
patient and their relatives.
Research problems: defining palliative care; theoretically uncover aspects of nursing
activities while providing assistance to a dying patient and their relatives; uncover nursing
activities while providing spiritual, psychological, social and psychical help to a dying patient;
setting nursing activities while assisting the relatives of a dying patient.
Research methods: analysis of scientific literature, quantitative research (anonymous
questionnaire by writing). 55 responders took the questions (general practice nurses), 40 surveys
were complete, while 15 were deemed unusable. Statistical data analysis was conducted.
Main finding of the empirical research: The research shows that the majority of
responders have had same experience taking care of dying patients. The most common problems
dying patients have to endure: physiological – breathing problems and poor appetite,
psychological – anxiety, fear, stress and depression, social and spiritual – the feeling of
loneliness, the neglect of relatives, the demand for communication and the need for faith
(confessions). The process of caring for a dying patient involves a general practice nurse, a
doctor, a patient and other specialists. Very often the physiological (medical) assistance is
required, while psychological, social and spiritual help is needed often. The majority of responders believe that the dying patient should not be concerned about an addiction to
painkillers and all of the responders agree that it is vital to ensure a dignified death of a patient.
Problems, which usually disturb ensuring comprehensive care are heavy work loads, lack of both
personnel and time. In order to ensure comprehensive care, additional services of a psychologist
and a cleric or a spiritual assistant are needed. It is equally important to care for both the patient
and the relatives. The majority of responders agree that both the patient and the relatives should
be responsible for making decisions. The relatives of the patient should be taken care of during
the time of patient’s stay in the hospital and in the event of their death. When in contact with
relatives of a dying patient, nurses frequently deal with lack of time and are under the pressure
from the relatives relating to the care of the patient. Responders after the patient’s death usually
notice the stress relatives experience and the lack of comprehensiveness to the information they
are given. The relatives usually required psychological help, with spiritual and emotional support
being as equally as important.
