Relevance of topic: According to Elmi et al. (2018), various studies have shown that about
64 % of medical staff (including nurses) have been exposed to blood or other body fluids at least
once in their lives. The World Health Organization (2002) states that out of 35 million health
workers, 2 million people are exposed to infectious diseases every year.
Purpose: To determine the injuries of surgical profile nurses with sharp instruments and
their prevention methods in X personal health care institution.
Objectives: Describe the injuries sustained by nurses with sharp instruments and blood -
borne infections in epidemiological, medical and legal terms. To determine the frequency and
nature of sharp injuries to surgical profile nurses in X personal health care institution. Assess
nurses' awareness of sharp instrument injuries registration at X personal health care institution.
Disclose what preventive measures are taken by nurses in case of sharp injuries in X personal health
care institution.
Methods of study and contingency: Literature analysis is performed. The Quantitative
research method was chosen. The questionnaire consisted of 31 questions. Quantitative analysis of
questionnaire results was performed. The study was conducted at X personal health care institution,
interviewing 55 surgical profile general nurses.
Results: More than three – tenths (34,5 %) of respondents say that within 12 months
injured more than three times. Most injured persons were injured during waste management (38,2
%) or removing the needle cap (18,2 %). The most common injury instrument was an injection
needle. When analyzing instrument contamination, as much as 32,7 % interviewees stated that the
injury instrument was contaminated with patient blood. According to the survey, more than half of
the respondents (67,3 %) said they did not report the incident to the responsible person.
Conclusions: Literature analysis suggests that nurses have the highest risk of injury from
sharp instruments. The most common injury is with the injection needle. More than half of the
respondents suffered a sharp instrument injury within 12 months. Most of the subjects were told
who to turn to when injured with a sharp instrument, but a large proportion of the interviewees were
not told what to do in the event of an incident. Most of those surveyed often wear gloves. However, more than three – tenths of the subjects said they did not wear gloves at the time of the injury. |
