dc.description In Lithuania about 50 people are diagnosed with cancer every single day, about 80 thousand people are suffering from oncological diseases at this very moment. According to the research of Oncology institute of Vilnius University, Lithuania, (as in other advanced world countries) each year almost 18 thousand people are diagnosed with oncology diseases. Cancer remains one of the biggest health problems worldwide. In the year 2018 about 17 million people worldwide were diagnosed with new cancer cases and almost 9,6 million cancer deaths. (National Cancer Institute, 2019). It is said that a person who is diagnosed with a malignant tumor would go into complete shock, suddenly all plans and dreams for the future crash and cause anxiety, fear and uncertainty for what is to come. Many oncological diseases are associated with death and pain, that is why cancer causes stress as it is unpredictable, frightening and causes so much confusion and completely transforms the persons and their family’s lives. As expected patients will also suffer from various psychosocial problems such as; stress, anxiety, depression and a change of social roles. All the people who are diagnosed not only feel the symptoms of cancer, but also the change of everyday activities, normal everyday routines, all relationships and financial status, therefore to meet health and social needs, different services are provided like social services. Health care in the Republic of Lithuania institutions provide health and social services. Major providers of social services are the employees and social workers of social care institutions. (Išoraitė, 2007). Social workers – are specialists whose jobs are to enhance the human adaptability of the environment, restoring public relations, help him integrate into it and boost human social functioning. Whether social workers in the health care institution have a significant impact maintaining or improving the health and living conditions of an oncological patient can only be verified by the patients themselves who have had to talk with social workers about their condition and experience. Subject matter of the research. Work of a social worker in a health care facility from the point of view of an oncological patient. Aim of this research. To acknowledge the attitude of people who suffer from oncological disease to a social worker’s obligations and duties in the health care system. Objectives of the research. 1. Oversee the issues that oncological diseases can cause psychologically and socially. 2. Outline the health and social care services specifying the distinctiveness of a social worker. 3. Evaluate the attitude of oncological patients to the activities of social workers in health care institutions. The respondents. Four oncological patients who have spoken to a social worker in a health care facility and are currently undergoing treatment at the public ‘Varėnos Hospital’, in the Nursing and Support Department section. en
