An empirical study reveald that while working with elderly and old people, a social worker follows the principles of interpersonal relations: individualization, meaningful expression of feelings, controlled emotional engagement, unlawful reception, client self-determination, confidentiality. It has been found that while working with elderly and old people, social workers create an authentic relationship with their client, by learning the life history of an elderly person, revealing their own and client’s feelings, accepting the client with his/her disadvantages and advantages. The study revealed that only two informants had difficulties in applying the principles of value at the beginning of their social work because of their lack of confidence. The study found that social workers follow the values set out in the code of Ethics for Lithuanian social workers: respect, empathy, responsibility, honesty. Informants do not imagine how social work with elderly and old people could be done without a clear understanding of the principles of the value. |
