Intellectual disability is a lifelong condition which occurs in early years of development and affects the learning ability, adaptive behavioral skills and functional independence (Hocking, Campbell, McNeil, 2016). Intellectual disability with and without physical disability can affect gross motor skills resulting in increased need for help in daily activities, decreased inpendence, higher risk of pain and other health problems associated with movement limitations (Hocking, Pearson, McNeil, 2013). Research (Hocking, Pearson, McNeil, 2013) shows that physiotherapy has improved gross motor skills in people with intellectual disability. Animal-assisted therapy is another way to improve gross motor skills for people with intellectual disabilities. Elmaci, Cevizci (2015) study proved that dog-assisted therapy and activity is the method for regular treatment of children with cerebral palsy, physical and mental disabilities.
Research problem. What are gross motor changes through physiotherapy also dog-assisted therapy for adolescents with moderate intellectual disability?
The aim of the research is to assess the effect of physiotherapy and dog-assisted therapy on gross motor changes in adolescents with moderate intellectual disability.
Research tasks: 1. To investigate gross motor changes in adolescents with a moderate intellectual disability before and after the dog-assisted therapy. 2. To investigate gross motor changes in adolescents with a moderate intellectual disability before and after the physiotherapy. 3. To compare gross motor changes in adolescents with a moderate intellectual disability after the dog-assisted therapy and physiotherapy.
Research methods. Quantitative study (experiment), statistical data process with Microsoft Excel and SPSS programs. Gross motor, coordination, muscle strength and balance were assessed during this study.
Subjects. 2 groups of 5 adolescents were formed during the study. 1 group of adolescents had the animal-assisted therapy, 2 group of adolescents had the physiotherapy.
Conclusions: 1. Gross motor, coordination, balance and muscle strenght rates are significantly better after physiotherapy procedures than before in adolescents with a moderate intellectual disability. 2. Gross motor, coordination, balance and muscle strenght rates are significantly better after the dog-assisted therapy than before in adolescents with a moderate intellectual disability. 3. Comparing the results, gross motor, coordination, balance and muscle strenght rates are significantly better after the dog-assisted therapy than physiotherapy in adolescents with a moderate intellectual disability. |
