Relevance of the project. Since people live longer, a possibility to be ill of neurodegenerative diseases is higher. It is estimated that 44 millions of people have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. In the United States of America 5.5 millions of people have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. It is expected that in 2030 there will be diagnosed about 65.7 millions of new clinical cases. According to the data of National Centre for Mental Health, in 2007 there were identified 1.95 per cent of the cases of dementia and Alzheimer’s diseases for a thousand of residents. In 2017 the number increased significantly: there were registered 3.56 per cent of diseases cases for a thousand of residents. Therefore it can be stated that morbidity is increasing. Thus an intensive search of ways how to delay the origin of the disease and to slow its progression is performed (Stepanavičius et al., 2011).
The aim of the project. To analyse nurses’ activity by dealing with nursing care problems of the patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
The goals of the project. 1) To reveal physical, social and psychological personality’s changes of the patients with Alzheimer’s disease. 2) To describe solutions of nursing care problems of the patients with Alzheimer’s disease. 3) To identify nurses’ activity by nursing the patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
The methodology of the project. In order to perform qualitative research, semi-structured interview was chosen; the data was collected in writing. There were presented 7 open-ended questions. There were questioned 4 nurses who take care of patients with Alzheimer’s disease. The participants of the research were the nurses from the age of 28 to 58. Average of the age is 45 years. Work experience is from 3 to 22 years. Average of work experience is 13.75 years. All the nurses have a university degree.
The results of the research. Nursing care of every patient is individual according his/her needs. The nurses of the patients with Alzheimer’s disease ensure well-balanced nutrition, qualitative sleep, hygiene and active movement for them. The nurses genuinely communicate with the patients, encourage them to be independent, schedule regiment of the day and occupation of the patients. The nurses allow them to feel safely and comfortably in nursing’s home.
Conclusions. 1. Alzheimer’s disease is usually characterized by disorders of eating and nutrition, dressing, urination and motion, person’s hygiene, movement, sleep and physical activity;
gradually progressive loss of social skills: ability to serve yourself, to manage your finances, ability to orient in time and space and loss of yourself; and psychological changes of personality: delirium, hallucinations, paranoia, depression, anxiety and mood swings. 2. Solutions of nursing care problems of the patients with Alzheimer’s disease are related to proper and qualitative conditions of care and environment, assurance of well-balanced nutrition, proper dressing, qualitative sleep, hygiene, motion and urination, maintenance of active movement, establishment of interpersonal contact and maintenance of sincere communication, evaluation and intensification of the patients abilities by forming their independence which requires a lot of patience and creativity from the nurses. 3. By analysing the nurses’ activity, it is identified that personal qualities are very important for the nurses of the patients with Alzheimer’s disease. They have to be patient, flexible and love people. Professionalism of the nurses is also important in order to help the patients in daily activities, to help eat, dress, to ensure personal hygiene, to schedule regiment of the day and to encourage independence of the patients. The nurses indicated that only individual nursing care can provide the patients with feelings of safety and comfort in nursing’s home and a possibility to feel yourself and be accepted for who you truly are. |
