dc.description Relevance of topic: According to statistics from countries where home birth is legal, 13 % of all women choose to give birth at home with an exception of Netherlands where 20% of all women chose home birth as planned option. Demand for such choice is also present in Lithuania. The current changes in legislative system to enable professional assistance to women who chose not to use medical institutions for giving birth opens floor for discussion. Even with the scientific data proving low risk pregnancy to be safe for home birth the different views on the sensitive subject spark harsh discussions within the society. There are currently no official studies conducted in Lithuania to assess women’s opinions on giving birth at home and the main reasons behind their decision. Aim of the thesis: To determine women’s views on giving birth at home and the determining factors. Main objectives:  To analyse women’s views on home birth and the determining factors of such choice;  To determine and collate the actual women’s views on home birth;  To determine the factors influencing the choice of giving birth at home. Methodology: The study was undertaken by choosing random numbers from desired probability distributions, 256 women of childbearing age partook in the survey. Research results and outcome: It was determined that women are more likely not choose the home birth option. The difference in opinions changed when respondents were asked to re-evaluate considering that home birth is legal and full professional assistance was available. Disregarding the personal views on the topic most women do support the right of giving birth at home. The main factors of negative view on home birth were mostly associated with willingness to trust in healthcare system, sense of insecurity, fear, lack of information, unfit home conditions. On the contrary positive views were closely aligned with those present in foreign country studies: safe psychological environment, a more comfortable and cosy home ambience, concern of overmedication, autonomy and a more natural process experience, bad previous hospital experiences, ability to choose surrounding people. en
