| dc.description | Relevance of the work: WHO together with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in 2014 set a global target of 50 percent exclusive breastfeeding till 6 months of age by 2025. Breastfeeding rates in Lithuania are lower than in the world. Aim: to reveal the breastfeeding experiences of women, who gave birth at the hospital, which has Baby friendly status and at the hospital, which doesn‘t have Baby friendly status. Objectives: to describe the advantages of breastfeeding and the importance of early breastfeeding, based on scientific literature; to reveal the breastfeeding experience of women who gave birth at the Baby friendly hospital; to disclose the breastfeeding experience of women who gave birth at the hospital which doesn‘t have Baby friendly status. Methods: a qualitative study was conducted, where were interviewed 10 women who gave birth at the hospital which has Baby friendly status and 10 women who gave birth at the hospital which doesn’t have Baby friendly status. Results: women who gave birth at the Baby friendly hospital received midwifery help for breastfeeding, were well informed about advantages of breastfeeding and got contacts of breastfeeding mother‘s support groups. Also they were ready to continue breastfeeding. Women who gave birth at the hospital which doesn‘t have Baby friendly hospital status were often recomended to start baby formula feeding, weren‘t well informed about breastfeeding advantages and didn‘t receive any information about breastfeeding support. Conclusions: the successful breastfeeding experience of women who gave birth at the Baby friendly hospital proves a fact that nine out of ten women still continued long term breastfeeding during this qualitative study.
