Santrauka:
Description:
Title. Women's knowledge of aromatherapy during pregnancy, its benefits and potential
harms.
Main words: Aromatherapy, pregnancy, essential oils.
Background. Aromatherapy has been known since the beginning of the earth’s
existence. By combining the advancing science and the old traditions of folk medicine over the
years, aromatherapy has become one of the most popular alternatives for the treatment of
diseases and health maintenance (Vaikšnorienė, 2006). Aromatherapy uses plant-derived
essential oils and fragrances that are beneficial to health, physical, and psychological problems
(Schoot et al., 2006). Despite all the positive properties of essential oils, their improper use can
cause undesirable problems, as essential oils and aromatherapy can provide toxic effects: skin
irritation, allergic reactions, phototoxic effect (Vaikšnorienė, 2006). Aromatherapy is a great tool
to help women reduce pain during childbirth, cope with the physiological worries of pregnancy
and early parenthood, and feel discomfort (Price et al., 2011). Although this is a fairly safe
method of treatment, pregnant women must look at aromatherapy and the choice of essential oils
much more carefully to protect themselves and the baby in the womb, as some essential oils are
known to cause spasms and have a stronger effect on the circulatory system. (Budrevičiūtė,
2019).
Problem of the study. What is women’s knowledge of aromatherapy for pregnant
women, its benefits and potential harms?
Object of the study. Women’s knowledge of aromatherapy for pregnant women, its
benefits and potential harms.
Aim of the study. To reveal women’s knowledge of aromatherapy for pregnant women,
its benefits and potential harms.
Tasks:
1. Describe the possibilities of using aromatherapy, its advantages, the uniqueness of its
use during pregnancy.
2. To distinguish safe and unsafe essential oils for pregnant women, their chemical
composition and use.
3. To reveal women's knowledge of aromatherapy for pregnant women.
Methods:
- Analysis of scientific and professional literature sources aimed at revealing
aromatherapy to pregnant women.
8
- Data collection method - quantitative research, online survey.
- Graphical data analysis.
Subjects: Respondents involved women of various ages and education. A total of 106
respondents. The study involved women at least 18 years old.
Results: The results of the study showed that adult women of all ages (regardless of
education) have used / use aromatherapy or aromatherapy products. The women in the study are
more aware of the requirements for independent use of essential oils than of the safety
requirements for the use of aromatherapy during pregnancy. One in five women surveyed is
unaware of the benefits of aromatherapy and the discomfort they cause, which it can reduce or
even eliminate. Respondents in the study feel the lack of information about aromatherapy during
pregnancy and think that it is useful to know more about it
