Description:
Over the past decade the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) among the population with chronic, often recurrent diseases, has become increasingly popular all over the world. According to the European Information Centre for Complementary & Alternative Medicine (EICCAM), more than 100 million citizens of the European Union (EU) are regular CAM users. On the basis of various epidemiological studies, the incidence of recurrent urinary tract infections remains high in all age groups. The purpose of the research is to reveal the use of the complementary and alternative medical remedies among the population with recurrent urinary tract infections. The objectives: 1. Theoretically reveal the concept, classification and tendencies of the use of the complementary and alternative medicine in the world. 2 Theoretically describe the treatment methods of the complementary and alternative medicine applied in modern practice for treatment of recurrent urinary tract infections. 3 Reveal the tendencies of the use of the complementary and alternative medicine among the population with recurrent urinary tract infections. The place of the research - Kaunas City Public Pharmacy. The duration of the research was from 15th February 2018 to 30th April 2018, considering the working hours of the pharmacy. In the research, the target group of respondents was interviewed, i.e. persons with recurrent urinary tract diseases. The sample of the research was 126 respondents. The following methods were chosen for the research: 1. The analysis of the scientific methodical literature of the selected topic; 2. Questionnaire; 3. Statistical analysis of the survey data using SPSS and Microsoft Excel programs. During research there was determined that more than half of respondents (69%) use complementary and alternative medicine for treatment of recurrent urinary tract diseases. Even 81.6% of respondents agreed that CAM should be legalized in order to improve the medical services provided by the CAM professionals. Conclusions: 1. In the definition of CAM, the word “complementary” emphasizes the complementing to the treatment methods of the conventional medicine and “alternative” emphasizes the replacing the conventional treatment methods. The National Centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicine has divided these medical remedies into five categories. 2. For the treatment of recurrent urinary tract infections in today's practice are often chosen unrecognized health promotion methods of medical science, such as the methodologies of the biosystem effects: diet, herbal preparations, dietary supplements. 3. The research revealed that more than half of the respondents use CAM for treatment of recurrent urinary tract infections. One third of the respondents indicated that urinary tract infections are persistent, and therefore, the remedies of CAM are used continuously.
