Description:
The relevance of the work. The relevance of the work is demonstrated by the increasing attention to patient safety in recent years which is related to the practice of nurses in the intensive care department. The aim of the paper is to identify the practice of nurses in the intensive care department in order to ensure patient safety. The objectives of the thesis: 1. To analyse the concept of patient safety, the causes of unwanted events and the factors which influence them. 2. Define nurses' actions in the intensive care unit while ensuring patient safety. 3. To compare the actions and applied techniques of nurses in intensive care departments to ensure patient safety, with the data of a study conducted in 2016. Empirical research methodology. The empirical part of the study revealed the activities of nurses in the intensive care department in order to ensure patient safety. A semi-structured questionnaire consisting of four parts was conducted: infection; skin integrity damage; adverse drug-related events; assessment of the risk of falls and injuries. Each part consists of tables with statements as well as open and closed ended questions. The research was based on a study by Olga Kareva (2016). Results and conclusions. According to the study, in order to avoid the risk of infection before each procedure nurses perform hand antiseptics and ensures the isolation of patients with infectious diseases, surface cleaning and disinfection. The study showed that in 2019, the number of nurses who were vaccinated against hepatitis B doubled. In order to prevent skin damage, nurses usually use lifting equipment and appropriate body pressure relief aids. According to the study which was conducted 2019, nurses increasingly pay attention to the patient's healthy diet. The comparison of data in 2016 and 2019 revealed that nurses' attitude towards nursing care facilities and actions taken to reduce the number of drug management mistakes remained similar; however, the attitude about communicating information to another shift became stronger, showing the importance of collaboration. While comparing the results of the study with the data from 2016 an assumption can be made that the use of assistive movement devices to prevent falls has increased. In 2019, more than half of the nurses use assistive devices to help patients, teamwork and collaboration activities are more intensive, nurses are involved in patient safety training and encouraged to report about any errors.
