dc.description Relevance of the topic: Increasing life expectancy is not only a positive phenomenon. According to Pivoriene (2004), an increase in the life expectancy means the growth in the number of elderly people, which may result in problems related to the care of old people. There is an opinion in the society that persons unable to take care of themselves should be cared for by their relatives. This is confirmed by the survey carried out in 2015 – 2016 by UAB Baltijos Tyrimai, which revealed that the residents of Lithuania, in the event of a need for care in old age, give preference to the care provided by their relatives (Lithuanian Social Research Centre, 2017). Relatives, who decide to take care of an elderly person at home, face a variety of difficulties that determine the social and psychological functioning disorders of the carer. Purpose of work: To determine the need for the activities of a social worker in addressing the psychosocial problems of relatives taking care of the elderly at home. Tasks of work: 1. To present the effects of the care of elderly people at home on the psychosocial functioning of the relatives. 2. To overview the activities of the social worker in dealing with the psychosocial problems of elderly people who are being cared for at home. 3. To disclose the need for the activities of a social worker in addressing the psychosocial problems of relatives taking care of the elderly at home. Object of work: The need for the activities of a social worker in addressing the psychosocial problems of elderly people who are being cared for at home. Question of research: What is the need for the activities of a social worker in addressing the psychosocial problems of elderly people who are being cared for at home? In the third part of the final work the analysis of the data of the qualitative research is presented. Conclusions of the research: The major need for activities of social worker noted by informants, was identified in the provision of information, advice, mediation and representation services, organization of transport services and of socio-cultural services. A low need was revealed for the activities of a social worker in organizing personal hygiene and washing services as well as other activities of a social worker – organization of psychological consultations and services, or assistance provided by assistant social care workers for persons at home. The research found that relatives caring for the elderly at home did not/do not feel the need for support with food products and provision of basic clothing and footwear renovation activities. During the research, the psychological problems experienced by informants caring for the elderly at home were revealed: experiencing of depressing feelings and states. During the research, the informants identified problems of work activity, weakening relations with family members and friends, and financial problems, which were named as the biggest social problems they faced. en
