dc.description Study title. Information spread regarding meningococcal infection, its pervasion, diagnostics and prevention, for parents raising children aged from 0 to 5 years. Study relevance. Meningococcal infection is wide spread all around the world and is topical public health issue as a result of considerable children morbidity and mortality. In order to decrease mentioned rates it is vital that the parents would be appropriately informed about infection diagnostics and possible means to elude the disease. Study objective. Reveal present awareness of parents, nurturing children aged from 0 to 5 years, regarding meningococcal infection advancement, diagnostics, and prevention. Study method. An instantaneous quantitative epidemiological inquiry was carried out, using anonymous questionnaire. Surveys participants were parents (N=103) upbringing children aged from 0 to 5 years. Research was realized in Zarasai city's nursery - school by announcing a survey at https://apklausa.lt web page. Study results. Half of the questioned parents, living in Zarasai, were aware that meningococcal infection is caused by a bacteria, whereas, parents in the outskirts believes, that the infection is caused by a virus. 70 percent of parents, of higher education, were informed how to differentiate meningococcal skin rash from other types of rashes. 80 percent of surveyed parents responded that the most crucial meningococcal infection indication is skin rash, but were not informed about the non - specific symptoms present in infants following 4-6 hours after infection. Also, said parents knew that meningococcal bacterium is transmitted by direct contact and airborne (from aerosols produced by an infected person) methods. 70 - 80 percent of questioned parents knew how brain liquid is collected, and what important analyses are performed in order to diagnose meningococcal infection. The majority of parents were aware of the most efficient defense means, such as vaccines, room conditioning and cleaning, and frequent hand washing. 70 - 80 percent of all parents regularly ventilate and clean their accommodation, often wash their hands, and only one third use vaccination as a mean to preserve their children from meningococcal infection. 80 percent of supposedly infected by meningococcal bacterium would decrease direct contact with other people, would wear a face mask and wash their hands. The majority of said parents would inform their physician, educational institution and people who had a direct contact with an ill child about the disease. Conclusion. Parents, who raise children aged from 0 to 5 years, knowledge about meningococcal infection is mediocre. It is established, that parents, who live in the urban areas, have a higher degree of education, have one child and are younger than 31 years, have more interest about the infection and have superior awareness about it, compared to the parents who live in the outskirts, who have elementary or technical education and raising more than one child. en
