dc.description Dabašinskaitė K. Oral The Occupational Therapy in Independence Oral Care for People with Intellectual Disability, professional bachelor’s thesis / academic supervisor lect. K. Žigienė; consultant lect. E. Lamsodienė; Kaunas College, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Rehabilitation. – Kaunas, 2018. Research purpose: To evaluate the oral care independence of people with intellectual disability when applying occupational therapy. Tasks: 1. Evaluate the oral care independence of people with intellectual disability. 2. Evaluate the oral care independence of people with intellectual disability before occupational therapy. 3. Evaluate the oral care independence of people with intellectual disability after occupational therapy. 4. Evaluate the change in the motivation of people with intellectual disability. Research methodology: The research was conducted at the Vilijampolė Social Care Home, in February and March of 2018. The research used combined methods, i.e. both quantitative and qualitative instruments of evaluation. The respondents were people with medium and severe mental disability. The subjects were aged 18 to 29. There were 11 subjects, 4 of them diagnosed with severe mental disability, and 7 with medium mental disability. At the beginning of the research, the subjects were evaluated using the PEDI test (the part concerning functional abilities) to assess their independence. The teeth brushing skill was assessed before and after occupational therapy through an observation protocol devised by the author, comprising 11 points. The motivation to perform activities was assessed before and after occupational therapy using a Volition Survey. Research results. After analysing the results, it was determined that the average level of independence among the subjects in taking care of themselves was 54.1 out 73 points. Average movement independence was determined to be 45.4 out of 54 points. Average social function was 36.6 out of 65 points. After comparing oral care independence before and after occupational therapy, it was determined that the subjects’ teeth cleaning abilities had improved. Occupational therapy also had an effect on the motivation to learn - after the study, the subjects were more motivated, put more voluntary effort into the activities than before occupational therapy. Conclusions. 1. People with mental disability are least independent in the area of social function, and most independent in the area of movement. 2. Before occupational therapy, the most difficult task for the subjects was independently preparing all the means required for brushing teeth, squeezing toothpaste onto the toothbrush, cleaning the tongue, rinsing the mouth. 3. After occupational therapy, some of the subjects learned to prepare all the means for brushing teeth; a quarter of them learned to clean their tongue; mouth rinsing results remained the unchanged. 4. Before occupational therapy, half of the subjects were suggestible and volunteering, the other half were passive and hesitant; after occupational therapy, no subjects were passive, most were volunteering and suggestible. en
