dc.description The mahor obejctive of this thesis is to reveal what teenagers and their parents know about the dental calculus and what is their view on it. Objective of the thesis: 1. To determine what causes dental calculus and what diseases if can lead to. 2. To describe methods that can help prevent dental calculus from forming. 3. To find out what teenagers and their parents know and think about dental calculus. The enpirical part of this thesis was gathered by surveying 200 randomly selected teenagers and parents. The quantitative research method was used for this thesis. The subjects of the thesis filled out surveys that were handed to them. I analysed the scientific literature listed above and it helped me to form a hypothesis that incorrectly brushed teeth can cause the formation of dental calculus wich can lead to tooth decay and periodontal disease. In my Opinion the results of the survey will help me to prove the hypothesis to be true or false in the most objective way.. The results of the survey – After analysing the results it is evident that at least 60% of the subjects do not know enough about the dental calculus. 17% of the subjects do not care about how well they brush their teeth. Only 37% knew how long they should brush their teeth and even 63% do it either for too long (longer than 2 minutes) or for too short (up to 1 minute). It is interesting that majority of the subjects did not know what bleeding gums might signal (21% of parents and 32% of children). In addiction to that, majority of the subjects claimed that they know about the dental damage that is caused by sweets (41% of parents and 22% of children). Majority also knew that too many sweets cause dental caries (39% of parents, 35% of children). It was concluded that the parents and their children view the diseases caused by dental calculus quite similarly. The teenagers and the parents answered the majority of the questions almost identically. It can be said that the parents heavily influence how their children view oral hygiene, diseases caused by dental calculus, the damage caused by sweet and oral hygiene in general. en
