Aim of the study – to evaluate the the effects of occupational therapy on upper extremity function and personal independence in MS patients. Objectives of the study – 1. To evaluate upper extremity function and personal independence in MS patients before the use of occupational therapy. 2. To evaluate upper extremity function and personal independence in MS patients after the use of occupational therapy. 3. To determine the relationships between upper extremity function and personal independence in MS patients. Methodology – The study took place in the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Kaunas District “OREMUS”. This study was conducted with 20 MS patients, 17 of which were women and 3 were men. The patients underwent a 10-day long occupational therapy treatment program. As part of the study, upper extremity function and personal independence were measured. Upper extremity function was determined using the Jebsen hand function test (JTT), handgrip strength was determined using a dynamometer, and the pinch strength was determined using a manometer. An ADL test was used to measure independence. Results – Before the treatment program the handgrip and pinch strength of the study participants was determined to be lower than the norm; however after the program, the there was a 3-4 kg increase in handgrip strength, and a 0.5-1 kg increase in pinch strength. Before the treatment program the average JTT test time was 123,14 ± 17,85 s. as opposed to the average of 108,83 ± 13,45 s. noted after the treatment. A notable increase in independence was determined as well, the ADL test average prior to the treatment was 21,8 ± 1,77, which improved to a score of 25,3 ± 1,51 after the MS patients completed the occupational therapy treatment program. The largest specimens handbreadth and fingertips compressions force and the relationship between the dominant handbreadth and the independent compression provided by it while performing housework, cooking (r=0,4) and non-dominant handbreadth compression force while performing identical tasks mentioned above (r=0,5).. The uttermost link between upper limbs functions and the independence of the dominant handbreadth is while performing personal toilet related activities(r=-0,7). Conclusion – 1. After assessing the upper extremity function in MS patients using the JTT, a dynamometer and manometer, it was determined to be lower than the norm. The most affected areas of everyday life were determined to be as follow: activities outside and the home, cleaning and maintaining the house, personal and toilet hygiene, cooking. 2. After assessing the upper extremity function in MS patients using the JTT, a dynamometer, and manometer, a notable improvement was determined. Mainly in cleaning and maintaining the house, personal and toilet hygiene, and cooking. 3. After evaluating the results of the occupational therapy treatment, it was determined that the patient’s personal independence (in cleaning and maintaining the home, up-keeping personal and toilet hygiene, and cooking) was closely related to their upper extremity function (e.g. handgrip strength and the pinch strength of the dominant hand).	en
