dc.description The relevance of the topic : Meningitis is a relevant issue both in Lithuanian and worldwide. According to the WHO statistics, bacterial meningitis causes approximately 170,000 deaths each year. Pursuant to the information of the Centre for Communicable Diseases and AIDS, 13 people died from bacterial meningitis in Lithuania in 2017. Meningitis is an infectious nervous system disorder that damages cerebral and epidural tissues. This disease can be caused by various microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria and fungi. It is an airborne disease and a source of infection is a person. The disease can manifest in various forms – from asymptomatic nasopharyngeal carriage to severe acute forms. The research aims at : evaluating the activities of a nurse who takes care of patients suffering from meningitis in intensive care unit. Objectives of the research work are as follows : 1. To provide a clinical profile of meningitis; 2. To describe the activities of a nurse who takes care of patients suffering from meningitis; 3. To determine the specifics of the activities of nurses who take care of patients suffering from meningitis in intensive care units. Two fields – theoretical and empirical – have been distinguished in the work. The first section of the theoretical part details the clinical profile of the meningitis disease. The second section of the theoretical part describes the activities of nurses who take care of patients suffering from meningitis. The section of empirical research aims at determining the specifics of the activities of nurses who take care of patients suffering from meningitis in intensive care units. The research methods used throughout the work include : literature analysis, questionnaire-based survey of the subjects of research and statistical descriptive analysis. The main results and conclusions of the research : All persons suffering from meningitis are isolated. The major share of respondents use disposable medical gloves, masks and observe the rules of aseptic and antiseptic techniques. Other self-protection means are used to a lesser extent. A significant share of nurses always provide the relatives of patients with protection means and take care of their training, however, the major share of nurses do not involve the relatives of patients into the nursing process. During lumbar puncture, the nurses prepare the means, assist and perform the instructions of the physician. During and after the procedure, it is 5 important to monitor the vital functions of a patient. It is also important to ensure the resting position of a patient after the procedure. There are cases of personnel exposure to patients suffering meningitis in the practice of nurses and this affects their activities. The major share of nurses do not stay long near those having meningitis and avoid communication with them en_US
