dc.description Relevance of the work. Emergency services are available worldwide for millions of people regardless of location, country or continent. The use of triage in the emergency department has many advantages, such as the small amount of data that allows the patient to be assigned to a particular category, to quickly evaluate the patient's condition and at the same time to reduce the flow of people in the emergency department. However, at the same time, it requires knowledge, responsibility, skills, ability to understand and assess the patient's state of health, its severity and timely targeting to treatment - all this is done by a qualified emergency care specialist. Aim of the research – to reveal the opinion of the nurses working in the emergency department on the competencies required at the triage process. Tasks of the research: To define patient triage principles in the emergency department; to describe the nurses' competences required for the emergency department triage process; to identify the factors influencing nurses' competencies for grading activities; to find out the opinion of the nurses working in the emergency department on the competencies required at the triage process. Methodology of the research. In order to evaluate the opinion of the nurses working in the emergency department on the competencies required at the triage process, a qualitative and quantitative study was carried out. In order to achieve the aim and tasks of the research, the scientific literature was analyzed, individual structured, closed-type questionnaire and semi-structured interview were performed. The method for selecting subjects is a non-probability, targeted and convenient sample. The survey involved interviewing 10 nurses working in the emergency department at the triage stage. The results of the research revealed that, according to the respondents, the triage nurses working in the emergency department must have both medical knowledge and personal qualities, abilities in grading patients. The results of the research show that the theory is broadly in line with the opinion of nurses about the competencies needed to categorize patients. The grader must be able to apply theoretical knowledge in practice, know the principles of categorization, evaluate the general health condition. Skills for sorting are also the following: ability to make decisions quickly, work in a team and in an emergency, communicate with people of all ages and suffering from various diseases. Also, the competencies of the grader are reflected in personal qualities such as responsibility, duty, patience, determination, compassion, flexibility and critical thinking. en_US
