dc.description Relevance of the topic. According to the data of National Cancer Institute (2018), prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer among men in Lithuania. More than 2,000 new cancer cases are diagnosed every year, and this number is constantly increasing. Radiotherapy is one of the main treatment methods for patients with prostate cancer (Mottet et al., 2010). In order to make the treatment as effective as possible, medical physicists make an individual treatment plan together with a doctor treating the patient by defining the main target volumes to be irradiated. One of them is planning target volume (PTV), which is determined to account for possible technical, organ movement or patient set-up errors (Antolak, Rosen, 1999). It is essential for the effectiveness of the patient’s treatment, since the size of PTV determines the irradiation dose received by healthy organs and its effect on the emergence of side effects (Gill et al., 2015). PTV margins for prostate radiotherapy may be calculated by each medical institution individually. Taking into account the individual nature of the calculation of margins, the question arises what are PTV margins for the patients treated at Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kauno Klinikos. Aim of the study: to determine PTV margins for prostate cancer treatment with radiotherapy using patient set-up errors. Objectives of the study: 1) to describe in theory the peculiarities of prostate cancer treatment and planning with radiotherapy; 2) to determine planning volume margins based on the data of set-up errors of prostate cancer patients treated with radiotherapy; 3) to compare PTV margins obtained by the author with the results of foreign scientists. Research methodology: theoretical part of the study is based on the analysis of scientific literature, and the empirical part of the study presents the results of quantitative research. The analysis of collected data was carried out with “Excel” and SPSS programmes. Brief description of the subjects: the data of 100 prostate cancer patients treated in 2017 were chosen for the study. The data were selected regardless of fraction size and dose for the patients. Structure: theoretical part of the study analyses the scientific literature on prostate cancer diagnostics, symptoms, treatment with radiotherapy and its side effects, the types of errors, target volumes, the influence of errors on the effectiveness of treatment and the methods of error reduction. The empirical part provides a description of the chosen research methodology and the analysis of obtained data, which is compared with the results of foreign scientists. Conclusions: having carried out calculations according to van Herk formula, the following PTV margins were obtained: in the vertical direction – 11.38 mm, in the longitudinal direction – 7.75 mm, in the lateral direction – 8.35 mm. Margin sizes obtained by foreign scientists and at Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kauno Klinikos were similar as the largest margins were observed in the vertical direction, the smallest in the longitudinal direction. en
dc.description.abstract Baigiamasis darbas skirtas nustatyti planuojamo tūrio paraštes prostatos vėžio gydymui spinduline terapija naudojant pacientų išguldymo paklaidas. Tyrimui atrinkti 100 2017m. LSMUL Kauno klinikose prostatos vėžį besigydžiusių pacientų duomenys. Rezultatai palyginti su užsienio mokslininkų gautomis PTV paraštėmis. Rezultatai: atlikus skaičiavimus pagal van Herko formulę, buvo gautos PTV paraštės: vertikalia kryptimi – 11,38 mm, išilgine kryptimi – 7,75 mm, šonine kryptimi – 8,35 mm. Tiek užsienio mokslininkų tyrimuose, tiek LSMUL Kauno klinikose apskaičiuotų paraščių dydžiai yra panašūs – didžiausios paraštės matomos vertikalia kryptimi, mažiausios – išilgine. en_US
